Caratoes is a Belgian/Hong Kong artist, performer, and world-builder. Nomadic since 2013, not bound by material, only by what the world needs to exist.
Born and raised in a small town in Belgium as the child of Hong Kong immigrants, she was always between worlds. Never quite fitting the template of either. That in-between became the engine of everything she makes. After studying biochemistry and game design, she moved to Amsterdam where she worked as a creative at Wieden+Kennedy, one of the world's most respected advertising agencies. It was there that walls started calling to her.
She left for Hong Kong to reconnect with her roots, and found graffiti waiting. The streets became her first canvas, then galleries, then buildings, then entire spaces. In a single year she completed 30+ murals across 24 locations, from the vibrant streets of Bali to the volcanic landscapes of Iceland, a pace that reflects not ambition but necessity. The worlds needed to exist, so she built them.
Today her practice spans large-scale murals, freestanding metal sculptures, large-scale installations, wearable performance suits she inhabits on stage, and immersive environments that audiences can physically enter. Each medium is a different door into the same world. She has collaborated with Nike, Facebook, and Four Seasons, and been featured in Juxtapoz and Hi-Fructose. Her work has been shown at Urban Nation Museum Berlin, one of the world's leading street art institutions.
Every piece begins at the threshold between worlds. Every portal is built for someone who needed one.
